The A.K. Rice Institute's board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of three new AKRI Fellows.

Sarah J. Brazaitis, Ph.D.

Dr. Brazaitis has made significant and lasting contributions in teaching, scholarship and to AKRI governance.  Her work at Teachers College, Columbia University,  provides one of the major training sites for group relations and is a core supporter of the New York Center’s work. Her partnership with New York University has expanded the opportunities for teaching, for consultation and for training of AKRI consultants.

Her contributions to governance include service on the Boards of both the New York Center and AKRI, making major contributions to both organizations.  As Vice President of the New York Center she promoted the expansion of group relations training.  She is now serving as program co-chair for the AKRI symposium. She also serves as a mentor in the AKRI Training and Certification Program.

Dr. Brazaitis has also promoted group relations work to institutions outside of AKRI, e.g., Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital and Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).  She has introduced group relations concepts to staff and interns in these institutions.

Dr. Brazaitis' contributions to scholarship include papers in the AKRI Reader, presentations at the 2006 AKRI Forum and multiple other presentations.

Beverly L. Malone, Ph.D., RN, FAAN

Dr. Beverly Malone has been a stellar representative of group relations work both inside and outside AKRI, nationally and internationally.  Her major contributions are both subtle and profound, affecting major systems in organizations and governments.

She has served in numerous staff roles around the US and abroad.  In her roles as President of the American Association of Nurses, as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Health during the Clinton administration, and as Dean of the Royal College of Nursing in Great Britain she has continuously placed group relations work in the center of her professional life.  She has brought group relations to a wider community, including directing a conference for deans of nursing schools of historically Black colleges and universities. She is now Chief Executive Officer of the National League for Nursing, New York.

Her contributions to scholarship have included presentations at AKRI Scientific Meetings, at the WBC Margaret Rioch Lecture, as well as numerous influential writings in her various roles in nursing.  She is a keynote speaker at the 2008 AKRI Symposium.

Mary B. McRae, Ed.D.

Dr. Mary McRae’s tremendous contributions to the field of group relations and to AKRI have had profound impact in the areas of teaching and education, research, scholarship, governance and to innovation.

Perhaps the highlight of her many accomplishments is Dr. McRae’s development of the NYU conferences.  Directing the conferences to the many facets of diversity, she has made a major contribution to the investigation of how the dynamics of difference operate in group life.  These conferences have provided a laboratory for innovation in conference design and research.  Her ongoing research embedded in conferences will provide valuable and much-needed data for the continued development of our work.

Her scholarship, which has brought her group relations perspective to bear on the socio-political ramifications of difference, focuses on group relations in multi-cultural contexts.  She has made many contributions to the group relations literature, and brought an awareness of group relations perspectives to a wider audience.

Dr. McRae's many contributions to governance include her service on the AKRI Board of Directors and her role as the AKRI representative to the Belgirate Conference. She has served on countless conference staffs, both nationally and internationally, and continues to make significant contributions to our work through academic research and her conference leadership. Dr. McRae has made several presentations of her research and findings, including a paper at the 2006 AKRI Forum.

The AKRI board is grateful to the Ad Hoc Committee on Fellows whose members reviewed all nominations and made recommendations that were ratified by the board. The members of the 2008 Ad Hoc Committee on Fellows were:
