Desires and Defences @ work 2018: Psychoanalytic Explorations

The Annual Meeting consists of a number of components: The first three days from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 offers Professional Development Workshops (PDWs). Thursday 21 is member’s day whereby members are updated on the work of the Board and its sub-committees, and the symposium will take place from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 of June.

In relation to the theme of the Symposium, many of us are familiar with the ‘felt sense’ of desire in our workplaces.  But it can be difficult to own, find a language for it, or translate it into action for ourselves or our organization. When we are able to understand, locate and act out of our desires, the result can be positive and generative. However, as is often the case, we tend to disown and repress our desires leaving us with feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction. The resultant empty void demands to be filled up in order to defend against feelings of disappointment, frustration and envy.  The symposium will explore what conscious and unconscious desires and defences are at play for individuals and collective groups in today’s workplaces.

The Symposium is a unique and ideal opportunity to share your experience and ideas with international colleagues, clinical analysts, group relations practitioners, organisational consultants, leaders, managers and coaches.

It is designed around Keynote speakers and a series of parallel sessions to explore the theme. It consists of academic papers and next year for the first time, it will also have a practitioner stream. The aim of both streams is to provide members and non-members of ISPSO with an opportunity to share their work with like-minded colleagues. We hope to create a fusion between the academic and the non-academic, consistent with our desire to recognize all forms of knowledge and learning.

If you would like to obtain further information on the AM, or if you are interested in submitting an abstract for either stream, please consult the ISPSO AM 2018 website.

Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is 30th December 2017.
