CONTEXT

The Authority, Leadership, Identity, and Virtuality Experience (ALIVE) is a hybrid learning opportunity in the group relations conference tradition. This event is offered in the space of what is traditionally known as the A.K. Rice Institute National Conference and is jointly sponsored by AKRI and Group Relations International.

This experiential event will offer many of the elements of a group relations conference, albeit it virtual space. This Zoom-based learning opportunity will seek to approximate some of the rich elements of study of any conference. As such, our focus will be on the exercise of authority, the emergence of leadership, and the unconscious dynamics inherent in the study of groups and social systems.

This event will also integrate direct attention to the social identity determinants that accompany and influence the study of authority and leadership as well as the impact of the virtual context for learning.

This event is further offered in the context of the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of a potentially post pandemic period. While we appear to be entering a “new now,” the contours of what is to become normative interaction among us is not yet known. Recognizing this nebulous reality, this learning opportunity will provide an approach to the experience that attempts to be nimble, agile and responsive to the emerging possibilities.

Finally, this experiential event acknowledges the continued presence of political popularity, racial strife, economic disparity, and climate crisis divides. ALIVE offers a space where exploration of such matters beyond the chatter of sound bites, social media posts, and echo chambers can be more richly and fully explored.

Quoting the Talmud,

“Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief. Do justly now, love mercy now, walk humbly now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but       neither are you free to abandon it.”

Let us become ALIVE to this new now and learn...together.
