It is one thing to decry the exploitation of human beings that is modern slavery. It is quite another to organize to eliminate slavery given complex systems of layered businesses, layered governments, and diverse workers, all of whom have economic interests.

This AKRI/OPUS workshop continues our examination of modern slavery. In this workshop we focus on the consulting tskills and perspectives necessary to bring about social change in complex systems. Our presenter, Aarti Kapoor, Founder and Executive Director of Embode, an organization that focuses on labor rights, child protection, and migration in Asia and Africa, is an advisor to both business groups and human rights groups (https://www.embode.co/). Embode consultants work on the ground at a national level leading activities that address exploitation and slavery. They are informed by a group relations perspective as they work with groups that have competing and overlapping interests in complex national business environments.

In this workshop we will engage with Aarti Kapoor in plenary and with each other in small groups. We will share feelings, think together, and consider hypotheses about systemic and societal dynamics involved in the exploitive and complex phenomenon of modern slavery. We can consider our own complicity in the system psychodynamics of modern slavery and think about what roles we might take as citizens in addressing this worldwide problem.
