PCCA 2023 Conference: DEMOCRACY UNDER FIRE: citizens fighting for their values
Friday, October 20, 2023 to Sunday, October 22, 2023
Category: Group Relations Conferences

"Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends than that good men should look on and do nothing."

John Stuart Mill 1867

Over the last 30 years democracy has been under attack. Increasingly countries are turning towards electing more populist or authoritarian governments.

The retreat from democracy is a retreat from tolerance towards differences within and between us and others, a retreat from the complexity of holding several perspectives, a retreat from free choice, from equality, and from the enforcement of human rights or civil rights.

Authoritarian government provides an imaginary stability through enforcing one picture of reality and gradually preventing freedom of choice, space, speech, and freedom of way of life.

Nevertheless, the striving for freedom and democracy remains strong and therefore the role of the active citizen is of major importance. Given this context PCCA is holding an experiential working conference on Democracy under Fire: Citizens fighting for their values.

Partners in Confronting Collective Atrocities (PCCA) was founded in 2007, with the aim of working through the intergenerational impact of the Holocaust and of other national and international conflicts, in the service of a better understanding among national groups worldwide (see https://p-cca.org/).

PCCA is the recipient of the 2019 Sigourney Award.
